PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

The Public Health landscape is changing due to sociodemographic shifts, climate-related crises, geopolitical influences, conflict, war and migration, humanitarian crises, emerging infectious diseases and the rapid and relentless advance of social media and artificial intelligence. The capacity of public health workforces nationally and internationally to prepare for, and respond to, emerging health threats is under scrutiny.

This ‘New Normal’ for public health calls for renewed attention to education and training in academic and professional programmes. Competencies for public health professionals are being reviewed and updated nationally and internationally, most notably by the Association of School of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Public health curricula, as evidenced by the ASPHER Core Curriculum for Public Health, are being redeveloped in line with updated needs and competency expectations.

This joint IJPH and PHR special Issue aims to foster knowledge and insights into contemporary and innovative approaches to Public Health education and training. For PHR, we invite high-quality Reviews (all types) and Policy Briefs. For IJPH, we invite Original Articles.

Topics of particular interest include:
• results of programme self-assessment, comparisons and modifications using toolkits developed for established curricular and / or competency frameworks;
• notable developments in public health curricula for education and training at local, regional or national level, aligned to establish curricular and / or competency frameworks;
• pedagogical developments in content, delivery and/or assessment of public health education and training programmes;
• partnerships and collaboration across boundaries (geographic, ethnic, minority or vulnerable groups) facilitating public health education in the community and wider context;
• analysis of the impact of geopolitics, artificial intelligence, social media, and/or mental health on the delivery and reception of public health education;
• evidence-based interventions and evidence of impact of education in climate, planetary or environmental health.

JPH and PHR publish Gold Open Access. Article processing charges (APCs) apply. The journals offer APC discounts for first authors from low- and middle-income countries.
IJPH and PHR double-blind peer-review and author guidelines apply. Submitted manuscripts must fully comply with journal rules for article type, length and format (please consult the information for authors on the IJPH or PHR website).
In case of acceptance after peer review, articles will be published in the online special issue approximately 3 weeks after acceptance.
