About this Special Issue

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 15 January 2027

Background

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and diabetes remain leading causes of morbidity, mortality, and disability. The current policy landscape offers unique momentum for strengthening collective action on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs): the European Commission has recently unveiled the European Union Cardiovascular Health Plan, while the Fourth United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health gathered governments to renew global political commitments to tackling NCDs.

Following the European Union Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes (JACARDI), this joint IJPH and PHR special Issue aims to stimulate scientific debate and collect high-quality evidence on current CVD and diabetes challenges and opportunities. For IJPH, we invite Original Articles and Theory and Concept pieces. For PHR, we invite Reviews (all types) and Policy Briefs.

The Special Issue seeks to foster actionable knowledge to advance effective, equitable, and sustainable responses that support healthier lives, more resilient health systems and stronger commitment to tackling noncommunicable diseases. We welcome contributions that highlight both the challenges and the opportunities of reshaping cardiovascular and diabetes care. Topics of particular interest include:

• Primary prevention, including health literacy, awareness and health promotion.
• Screening of high-risk populations.
• Integrated health pathways, including health care organization, patient self-management and reintegration into the workforce.
• Data infrastructure and digital technologies as drivers of evidence-informed decision-making and innovation.
• Health system strengthening, focusing on governance, finance and service delivery.
• Strategies to reduce health inequities and to ensure that populations living in vulnerable situations are not left behind.
